Password generator

Create a password in your browser with a random generator. A reproducible seed is optional and is not a secret.

The answer

A password is created in this browser from the Web Cryptography random source. Choose a length from 8 to 64, and choose lowercase, uppercase, digits, symbols, or a mix. The password stays on the page and is not added to the address.

What do you want to do next?

How this works

Generate reads random bytes in the browser and maps them onto the character sets left on. Each enabled set contributes at least one character. The rest of the length is filled from the combined alphabet, then the characters are shuffled.

Reproducible mode stays off until you check it. That mode hashes a seed you type and may place the seed in the address so the same password can be rebuilt. Anyone who can see the seed can rebuild it, so that mode is not a secret. The password text itself is still kept out of the address.

Practical steps

  1. 1

Choose a length and the character types the site allows.

  2. 2

Press Generate. A new password is created here and is not added to the address.

  3. 3

Check reproducible mode only when you must rebuild the same password from a seed you control.

Examples

  • Length 16 with every set on

The result contains a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a digit, and a symbol. Another visit creates a different password unless reproducible mode is on.

Common mistakes

  • ×

Sharing a reproducible page address and then reusing that password on an account that matters.

Frequently asked questions

Will a refresh change the password?

Yes, unless reproducible mode is on. A normal refresh asks the browser for a new password.

Why is reproducible mode marked not secure?

The seed can sit in the address. Anyone with that address can rebuild the password, so do not use it for a secret you must keep.
