Markdown preview

Preview a small Markdown subset as HTML. Raw HTML in the paste is shown as text, not rendered.

The answer

Headings, paragraphs, emphasis, inline code, fenced code, links, lists, and blockquotes are previewed. Tags you type are escaped, and a link is kept only when it is http, https, or mailto.

Result

Preview

Hello

A bold word.

HTML

<h1>Hello</h1><p>A <strong>bold</strong> word.</p>

What do you want to do next?

How this works

The preview covers one level of structure: headings of one to three hashes, paragraphs, bold, italic, inline code, fenced code, blockquotes, and simple lists. Tables, images, and nested formatting are left as text.

HTML in the source is escaped before any Markdown is applied, so a script tag cannot run. Links that are not http, https, or mailto are shown as the link text only.

Practical steps

  1. 1

    Paste the Markdown.

  2. 2

Read the preview for structure, then the HTML if you need the tags.

  3. 3

Do not rely on this preview for Markdown features it does not list, such as tables.

Examples

  • A heading and bold text

    # Hello followed by a blank line and **bold** becomes a heading and a strong word.

Common mistakes

  • ×

Expecting a table or a footnote to preview. Those constructs are outside this subset.
