Word counter

Count words, characters, and characters without spaces in a draft you paste into the page.

Short answer

Words are separated by whitespace. Characters include spaces. Characters without spaces do not. An empty box is zero, which is a real count.

How this works

A word is a run of non-space characters. “well-known” is one word. A line break starts a new word. This will not match every publisher’s rule for hyphenation, and it does not count Markdown as rendered text.

If the limit is words, use the word count. If the limit is characters, check whether spaces count before you rely on either character number.

Examples

  • “one two”

2 words, 7 characters, 6 characters without the space.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing a word count with a character limit, or the reverse.
