Character counter

Count characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines, with a separate count that leaves spaces out.

The answer

Characters include every symbol you paste, spaces included. Words are runs of non-space text. Sentences end at a period, question mark, or exclamation point.

Spaces count in the character total.

How this works

The character count is the length of the text, including spaces and line breaks. The count without spaces removes whitespace only. Words split on any whitespace, so a hyphenated word stays one word.

A sentence is the text up to . ! or ? or the final fragment if you did not add punctuation. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. This will not match a publisher that counts Markdown as rendered words.

Practical steps

  1. 1

Paste the draft into the box.

  2. 2

Read characters if the limit includes spaces, and characters without spaces if it does not.

  3. 3

Use sentences, paragraphs, and lines only when the assignment names those units.

Examples

  • “one two”

2 words, 7 characters, and 6 characters without the space.

Common mistakes

  • ×

Comparing a character limit with the word count.

  • ×

Forgetting that a blank line still contains newline characters.

Frequently asked questions

Does a line break count as a character?

Yes. It is a character in the text. It does not count as a word.

Is “well-known” two words?

No. A word is a run of non-space characters, so the hyphen keeps it as one word.
