Tip calculator

Split a bill and a tip across the table from the bill amount, the tip percent, and how many people are paying.

Short answer

Tip = bill × percent ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Each person pays the total divided by the number of people.

Tip

$12.80

Total
$76.80
Each person pays
$38.40

How this works

The tip is calculated on the bill you enter. If tax should be excluded, subtract it before you start. The split is even. For an uneven split, calculate one share and adjust the people count only for the portion you are dividing.

A 20% tip on $64 is $12.80. Two people pay $38.40 each, which is half of $76.80, not half of the bill plus a second tip.

Examples

  • $64 bill, 20% tip, 2 people

    Tip $12.80. Total $76.80. Each person $38.40.

Common mistakes

  • Tipping on the total that already includes a tip.
  • Rounding each share up so far that the table overpays without noticing.

Frequently asked questions

Does this choose the right percent?
No. It uses the percent you enter. Local custom is not a formula.
