Annual salary to hourly rate
Convert an annual salary into an hourly rate from the hours you actually work in a week and a year.
Short answer
Divide the annual salary by hours per week times weeks per year. A common full-time convention is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
How this works
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). The 2,080-hour year is a convention: 40 hours times 52 weeks. It is not a law, and it ignores unpaid leave.
If you take unpaid weeks off, lower the weeks. If the role is 37.5 hours, use 37.5. The calculator is only as honest as those two inputs.
Examples
$100,000 at 40 hours and 52 weeks
100,000 ÷ 2,080 = $48.08 an hour.
Same salary, 37.5 hours
100,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52) = $51.28 an hour. The offer did not change. The assumption did.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 2,000 and calling it exact. That is a rounded year, not 40 × 52.
- Comparing a salaried offer with an hourly wage that already includes overtime.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I use 52 or 50 weeks?
- Use 52 only if the salary covers every week. If you have unpaid time off, use the weeks you are actually paid.
- Does this include taxes?
- No. This is gross pay. Take-home pay depends on withholding, which this page does not estimate.
