Sales tax calculator
Add a sales tax rate you enter to a price, and see the tax and the total.
The answer
Sales tax is the price times the rate divided by 100. The total is the price plus that tax. The rate is the one you type, not a lookup of your state.
How this works
Tax = price × rate ÷ 100. Total = price + tax. A $40 item at 8.25% is $3.30 in tax and $43.30 at the register.
This page does not know which rate a city charges, and it does not decide whether an item is exempt. If two rates apply, run the calculator twice rather than adding the percents into one number and hoping the base is the same.
Examples
$40 at 8.25%
Tax is $3.30. Total is $43.30.
Common mistakes
- Adding the tax rate to a price that already includes tax.
- Combining a state rate and a city rate without checking they apply to the same price.
Questions
Will this look up my local rate?
No. Enter the rate from the receipt or the tax agency. A guessed rate is a guessed total.
