Rent affordability calculator

Turn a monthly income and a share you choose into a rent amount, and show what is left.

The answer

Rent = monthly income × the share you choose ÷ 100. What is left is the income minus that rent. The share is your input, not a rule.

30 is a planning figure you can change. It is not a rule.

Rent at this share

$1,500.00

Left after rent
$3,500.00

How this works

Enter the monthly income you can actually spend, after tax if that is the money you pay rent from. Enter the share you are willing to put toward rent. Thirty is a common planning figure. It is not a law, and a different city or a different debt load can make a different share the honest one.

The result is that share of the income, and the remainder. It does not include a deposit, utilities, or a fee the listing adds on top.

Examples

  • $5,000 income, 30% share

    Rent $1,500. $3,500 left.

Common mistakes

  • Using a yearly salary without dividing by 12.
  • Treating 30% as a promise that a landlord or a lender will agree.

Questions

Is 30% the right share?

It is the default in the box so you can see a figure. Change it. The calculator does not know your other bills.
