GPA calculator
See how one new course changes a GPA from the credits you already have and the grade points for the new course.
The answer
New GPA = (current GPA × credits so far + grade points × new credits) ÷ total credits. An A is 4.0 on this scale. A school with a different scale needs that scale’s points.
How this works
Multiply the current GPA by the credits already earned. Add the new course’s grade points times its credits. Divide by the combined credits. A 3.20 GPA across 30 credits, plus an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, is (96 + 12) ÷ 33 = 3.27.
This uses a 4.0 scale. If your school uses a different highest grade, convert that grade to the points your school publishes before you enter it. The calculator does not look up a school’s catalog.
Examples
3.20 across 30 credits, plus an A in 3 credits
3.27 after the course. 33 credits.
Common mistakes
- Averaging the new grade with the GPA and ignoring how many credits each one covers.
- Entering a percent, such as 90, into a field that expects 4.0-scale points.
Questions
What if this is the first course?
Set credits so far to 0. The result is the grade points of the course you add.
